The Deccani breed derives its name from the region Dakkan (Deccan), corresponding to its original spread across the Deccan plateau of Telangana, Northern Karnataka, Maharashtra, and parts of Northern Tamil Nadu.The breed has a thin neck, narrow chest, prominent spinal processes. It has Roman nose and dropping ears. The colour is dominantly black, with some grey and roan. Different strains (or within breed types) are observed in the breed tract. Four types have been noticed. Local people term them as Viz. Lonand, Sangamneri, Solapuri (Sangola) and Kolhapuri. Body weighs around 20.10 and 22.57 Kg at 4- 6 months of age.
