I want to set up a dairy farm with 10 milking cows. A2 variety. High yield. What breeds should I buy I would prefer two breeds
For an A2 dairy farm, Gir and Sahiwal are the best two breeds to start with. They suit premium milk branding, handle Indian heat better, and stay productive with proper feeding and care. If you want higher volume than pure indigenous cows, you can also keep HF cross or Jersey cross, but for A2 positioning Gir and Sahiwal are the cleaner choice. For ten milking cows, do not buy only on breed name. First milk each cow in your presence, then do a CMT test on all four quarters, then ask which month of lactation she is in. A cow in month seven or eight will drop fast soon. Check age too, and avoid cows above seven years. For any cow above ₹fifty thousand, take a Pashumitra or vet with you before payment. If you want fifteen litres or more consistently, remember one cow gives peak yield only in months two to three, so stagger calvings or keep two groups. Treating the wrong cow is costly, so buy carefully now.
