What feed should I give after calving?

After calving, give warm water first, then soft green fodder, good dry fodder, and a little concentrate in small meals. Increase the concentrate slowly over three to five days as milk starts rising. Keep mineral mixture in the ration and give fresh water often. Do not give very heavy feed on the first day, because that can upset the stomach and reduce appetite. If she is weak, not eating, or the placenta has not come out, get her checked the same day. Treating this early protects milk yield and avoids a bigger loss later.
