Which breed is best for my area?
For Aligonda in Gajapati, Odisha, a good crossbred cow is usually the best dairy choice. If your shed is cool and feed is strong, HF cross can give higher milk. If you want a tougher cow with better heat tolerance, Jersey cross or Sahiwal is safer. Gir is also a good hardy option. If you want fifteen liters or more every day, remember one cow will peak only in the second to third month after calving, then milk slowly falls, so two cows with staggered calvings are better for steady supply. Before buying, milk the cow in your presence, do a CMT test on all four quarters, ask the lactation month, and take a Pashumitra or vet if the price is above fifty thousand rupees.
